Highlight for Album: Hale Tiki, Augusta, GA, R.I.P.
Hale Tiki, Augusta, GA, R.I.P.
Re-edited Feb 2006- Sadly I must now change this description, whereas I once said- "Go to Augusta, GA! You'll be glad you did!", I can now only say, go to Augusta, GA, and raise a glass to the remains of the once mighty Hale Tiki! Hale Tiki was one of the finest examples of a 'modern' Tiki establishment, the build out was done by TikiCentral Ohana, and Brad the Beachcomber once served allowed us to partake of the "concubines" here- the 'concubine' being the house drink, that is! Alas, The Hale Tiki closed its doors Feb 24th 2006. From the original description- "The Hale Tiki is beyond words. We visited after it had been open roughly 9 months to find Tiki perfection in GA, believe it or not! Our fine hosts, the music, the mixology, the space, and all the hard work that's gone into it- it was all we could do to stare in blissful wonderment! A small cadre of Tiki Centralites spent an insane few days building this modern Temple- and in every way imaginable- they got it right! The Hale Tiki is a perfect 10; a standard against which other modern Tiki Temples can be judged."

Honolulu Tiki Preservation, & Final Aloha
The Tiki Gods smiled down on us and through some other kind soul stepping aside, we gained the two outdoor Tiki poles from the Honolulu auction. This is the photographic record of some determined Tiki preservationists set on saving the Tikis. ....... A word of caution though; this album also contains pictures of the emptied out restaurant's shell- and can be disturbing.

Highlight for Album: *GALLERIES*- CA Coastal Crawl- Northern California
*GALLERIES*- CA Coastal Crawl- Northern California
We didn't have much luck finding Tikis in the redwoods. Once you pass the Hukilau Island Grill and Bar in Sacramento it's a LONG haul to Portland, OR for your next serious dose of Tiki. BUT just when all hope was lost, standing there, amidst carved bears and eagles at a carver's lot in Orick was a happy Tiki greeting weary travelers and sending them off on happy trails. Thus ended the northern most edge of the CA (mostly) Coastal Tiki Crawl '05. Then again, he may just be the first sign of things to come for those headed south! All a matter of perspective really.

Less than 24 hours in state, but still plenty of Tiki to see! Along the way we find a Tikified caffine stop. Then our late night trip to the Alibi and return the next afternoon were well worth it!

The much beloved Honolulu was open for more than 25 years in the VA suburbs. Master Mixologist David Chan's libations will be sorely missed! Both Richard Nixon and I agreed on at least one thing- David's Navy Grogs! For their website and forthcoming Mai Tai mix, see http://www.time2tiki.com/.

*GALLERIES* Hot Rod Hula Hop 4, Columbus, Ohio, August 8th & 9th, 2008
The Fraternal Order of Moai, or FOM, threw their fourth annual Hot Rod Hula Hop (HRHH) in Columbus at Largo's Tavern. Friday night's "Feast of the Tiki Gods" was once again, incredible, right down to the Roast Kalua Pig! We were serenaded by Francis Llacuna (who used to play at the Tropical Bistro) and later on we were treated to breathtaking hula by Leilani Duteil. Saturday, Largo's parking lot filled with Tiki vendors, and magnificent custom and vintage hot rods, rolling labours of love. As dusk fell, Lucky, The Painproof Man put on his incredible sideshow performance. Later on in the evening, Barnyard Burlesque did a special show created just for the HRHH. Both nights the bands and musicians; Pablus, Waitiki, Vegas 66, Go Tsunami, the Cocktail Preachers, The Heptanes, and the Koffin Kats were fantastic! The HRHH is one of my favourite Tiki events, it's unlike any of the other events I've been to. It has a very special vibe and is put on by some incredibly special people.
