Highlight for Album: Islamorada, FL (Florida Keys)
Islamorada, FL (Florida Keys)
Once upon a time, in the 50's that is, it's clear, Islamorada had a real Tiki vibe going. The Sunset Inn (alongside the very 50's but probably never Tiki, La Jolla), The Islander Resort, The Kon-Tiki resort, the Kona-Kai and even the Holiday Isle Tiki bar- where the rumrunner was created, all were part of an island community hinting at the Pacific not the Atlantic. What remains now seems shards without coherence. You will however, still find http://www.tikicompany.com/ carving and selling their Tikis along route 1 and plenty of cinderblock 50's leftovers waiting to be discovered.

Highlight for Album: Coast to Coast Int'l Tiki Trek- Trader Dick's, Sparks (near Reno), NV
Coast to Coast Int'l Tiki Trek- Trader Dick's, Sparks (near Reno), NV
We took time out of CA along our Tiki Trek to make a side trip over to Reno, NV- specifically to seek out Trader Dick's. Despite the odd underwater stained glass lamps and lack of hanging fish floats or pufferfish lamps, we enjoyed Trader Dick's just the same! One gets the feeling they are enjoying dinner somewhere deep within the jungle, with Tikis peering out from under leaves at you! Many classic Tiki elements and artifacts remain. Just be careful to avoid the Karaoke!

*GALLERIES* CA Coastal Crawl- between Los Angeles and San Francisco
Explorations of Gorda Springs, Big Sur (where we even found Tiki Farm mugs at the Phoenix shop at Nepenthe! http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/phoenix/index-p.htm Lunch at Nepenthe, while not Tiki, is NOT to be missed, if you're ever in Big Sur!) and Monterey. Here you'll also find a pictures from our visit to Unga Bunga's home bar- "Unga Bunga's Bungalo"! After our time in Monterey, we took Unga Bunga's advise and found glass floats at "Little Baja" pottery. Then, followed our local guide's suggestion and spent an early afternoon exploring Bamboo Giant's (http://www.bamboogiant.com/) bamboo gardens! Finally, be sure to check out Shecky's visit home to the Munktiki studio in Monterey over in the "Where's Shecky #60?" Gallery.
