The Fraternal Order of Moai, or FOM, threw their fourth annual Hot Rod Hula Hop (HRHH) in Columbus at Largo's Tavern. Friday night's "Feast of the Tiki Gods" was once again, incredible, right down to the Roast Kalua Pig! We were serenaded by Francis Llacuna (who used to play at the Tropical Bistro) and later on we were treated to breathtaking hula by Leilani Duteil. Saturday, Largo's parking lot filled with Tiki vendors, and magnificent custom and vintage hot rods, rolling labours of love. As dusk fell, Lucky, The Painproof Man put on his incredible sideshow performance. Later on in the evening, Barnyard Burlesque did a special show created just for the HRHH. Both nights the bands and musicians; Pablus, Waitiki, Vegas 66, Go Tsunami, the Cocktail Preachers, The Heptanes, and the Koffin Kats were fantastic! The HRHH is one of my favourite Tiki events, it's unlike any of the other events I've been to. It has a very special vibe and is put on by some incredibly special people.

Cheng's is owned by the same owners as the now RIPed Pacific Restaurant which was also in Sterling, VA. Many food and drink items that made Pacific so special live on at Cheng's. These pictures are from a gathering of the MD/DC/VA Ohana who got together to hold a wake of sorts for the Pacific. Fortunately, it was not a sad wake, but a celebratory gathering fueled by Mai Tais, Suffering Bastards, Zombies and Navy Grogs along with a bountiful table of appetizer treasures. Cheng's was welcoming and they shared their fantastic hospitality with the displaced Tikiphiles. When in Sterling, Cheng's is your best bet for a good Mai Tai!

With deep sadness, I add the Tropical Bistro to the ongoing R.I.P. listings here on sevenpleasures. Aloha! Original album description follows- As part of our trip out to Ohio in June, we met up with Central Ohio Tiki Ohana and Fraternal Order of the Moai friends. This was my first trip to the Tropical Bistro, and my first smoking erruption since the close of the Kahiki. What began as a few friends getting together for dinner and a drink grew into an event mentioned in the local alterna-paper and a room full of Tikiphiles! Mahalo for making my first trip to the Tropical Bistro so special!

Update- Alas, the Pacific is not more. It too has passed on into the deep jungle mists.

Fortunately, many of the recipes and drinks should live on at Cheng's-

Sterling, VA 20165

Original album description-

If Vera's White Sands is our local Maryland authentic 'vintage' Tiki, The Pacific in VA is our 'local' neo-Tiki. Despite its brick exterior, an exotic oasis awaits! Unfortunately, our lousy cell phone camera fails to capture the gist of it. These from a recent trip with our friend.

Maryland's own little slice of Polynesia. Update, while Vera's lives on, it's in a new incarnation. It no longer looks like these pictures. Pieces of the original Veras are still intact, but many Tikis and the large Moai have been moved, the A-frame dismantled, and what remains now lives on in blue, not pink.

Chisel Slinger and Sweet Beak's home bars and backyard just completely blew me away! Everywhere, you look, around each corner are Chisel Slinger's Tikis, each with personality and lovingly carved. Of all the home bars we've been fortunate enough to explore, theirs most reminded me of Bahooka (in L.A.), everytime you think you're seeing it, you round another corner to find MORE! (All of which makes it really difficult to express in any one photograph, so I highlighted the photo most reminicent of the mood/tone.) It's nautical, well thought through and perfectly relaxing. It is also home to numerous Kahiki artifacts; all kinds of goodies, from lamps, to a birdcage, to a bamboo fire extinguisher cover!

Tikiskip's collection is one of the most dense/all encompassing collections we've ever 'toured'. There are vastly tikifield rooms throughout the house, and then shelves of the tiniest details; filled with small bottles, matchbooks, and other treasures. Many Kahiki bits and pieces have found thier way to make a permanent home here. When we were there, we got to photograph the Kahiki table and 'tablesetting' , but since our visit, they have since added one of the two Kahiki Moai from the Kahiki's front entrance.. It's good to see these pieces in a living and loved Tiki environment. Like so many of the other central Ohio Ohana, (my 'hometown'!), they are doing Tiki damn proud!

A visit to the Kahiki Outlet store (and plant for frozen Kahiki treats) in Columbus, Ohio. Update- the Kahiki outlet closed in 2006, although the factory itself as well as some artifacts, George- the fountain, and the buiding's paint job live on.

Truely a Tiki haven! Sam's has a Polynesian revue weekly. But my favorite part has to be the 'postwar' feeling of Sam's; from the newspaper articles on the wall to the Mural in the bar, Sam's reflects the memories of our boys in the South Seas. It represents a moment in time. The bar, is unbelievable, and the hidden village, not to be missed. http://www.samsseafood.com/

The HRHH2 was the second big annual event thrown by the Fraternal Order of Maoi (http://www.fraternalorderofmoai.org/), and the Drifters.
It was a weekend long extravaganza that kicked off with the Feast of the Gods at the Tropical Bistro (new home to many former employees of the famed Kahiki), then went north on Saturday up to Largo's Tavern. With a parking lot filled with vintage rides, and a bar filled with exotic libations, ono grinds, venders, Barnyard Burlesque, custom mugs and a full slate of excellent bands, the HRHH2 was a high energy labor of love!

Naturally, each of us thought the other of us had taken plenty of hot rod pix, so we ended up with next to none! Sorry Drifters! Guess we'll have to rely on others to have done the documentary work there. We did get lots of pix later on in the evening of the bands and Barnyard Burlesque, though. The Fraternal Order of Moai (in their HOT new Moai Fez!) put on one hell of an event!
