Explorations of Gorda Springs, Big Sur (where we even found Tiki Farm mugs at the Phoenix shop at Nepenthe! http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/phoenix/index-p.htm Lunch at Nepenthe, while not Tiki, is NOT to be missed, if you're ever in Big Sur!) and Monterey. Here you'll also find a pictures from our visit to Unga Bunga's home bar- "Unga Bunga's Bungalo"! After our time in Monterey, we took Unga Bunga's advise and found glass floats at "Little Baja" pottery. Then, followed our local guide's suggestion and spent an early afternoon exploring Bamboo Giant's (http://www.bamboogiant.com/) bamboo gardens! Finally, be sure to check out Shecky's visit home to the Munktiki studio in Monterey over in the "Where's Shecky #60?" Gallery.

Gordo Springs is really little more than an all in one roadside stop on the southern end of Big Sur. Gas, Lodging, a coffee stop, and most importantly to Tikiphiles- the Whale Watcher cafe. Quite by accident we stumbled across two really wonderful poles depicting bare breasted Tahitian maidens and full body Tikis.

We actually explored Hula's twice on this trip, once before we went down to Big Sur, and then again once we came back through Monterey. The first night we enjoyed the first room bar area, which seemed more Hawai'iana. But on the second trip we enjoyed the 'Tiki Room' and found exactly the experience we had come for; a dimmly lit set of booths and tables under the watchful eye of their collection of black velvets, enshrined Tikis, huge float balls, and fake foliage! [Best enjoyed while sipping from your take home Munktiki mug!] And the food? Delish!

Unga Bunga was kind enough to share his magnificent home bar with two weary Tiki travelers. Of all the unique details he had lovingly crafted for his bar; a goldfish 'float' with a sunken Mr. Bali Hai, a waterfall with lush greenery, and a micro Japanese Garden with Tikis and a deer scarer, I found his tales of disocvering Tiki at Disney's enchanted Tiki room, and thus the Tiki room model behind the bar, were perhaps his greatest treasure of all. MAHALO!

The Kon Tiki has apparently been relatively de-Tikied. It's restaurant, 'Steamers of Pismo' used to be very a venerable temple, but alas, the architecture is the primary bit of Tikiness left.
