The wonderful sign for the (a-hem) 'recently remodeled' Islander Resort... alas. The Islander's home page can be found at www.islanderfloridakeys.com/index.php

The sign itself is a protected historic landmark, unffortunately whatever Tiki there may once have been on the interior, the pictures on the website show no trace.

The resort does have a 'Bluewater Tiki Bar' restaurant, however the glaring white metal of the patio furniture and the nautical blue fabrics kept us at bay. Perhaps on another trip to the Keys we'll explore further. Looks like a nice enough place- just not Tiki.

As I promised in a thread on Tiki Central, after Hukilau we did go find the Sunset
Inn and document what's left of what was obviously once a Tiki Treasure- see- http://www.tikiroom.com/tikicentral/

Unfortunately, the camera's exposure didn't come out right on some of the pictures, it was actually a rather dark day.

Here you can see the left edge of the old restaurant/bar area in turquoise, and some of the hotel rooms to the left in pink.

This is the right half of the restaurant/bar you can see where it once came to the A-frame with the Tiki, now it's just an odd shape in need of some serious roof replacement.

The rounded monstrosity above the car is where the A-frame and Tiki were, the rounded stone hut feature still survives, but the ornate roof is long gone.

"Mangrove Mike's" is in what once was the old restaurant- we needed more time for further exploration, but only had time to snap the few pictures.

As you can see, the once sedate blue sea hues have been replaced by hideous pink and dark blue on the hotel portion itself.

The sign is still a real work of art, but now the palms just scream 'Florida' not 'something exotic just ahead!'
