Cheng's is owned by the same owners as the now RIPed Pacific Restaurant which was also in Sterling, VA. Many food and drink items that made Pacific so special live on at Cheng's. These pictures are from a gathering of the MD/DC/VA Ohana who got together to hold a wake of sorts for the Pacific. Fortunately, it was not a sad wake, but a celebratory gathering fueled by Mai Tais, Suffering Bastards, Zombies and Navy Grogs along with a bountiful table of appetizer treasures. Cheng's was welcoming and they shared their fantastic hospitality with the displaced Tikiphiles. When in Sterling, Cheng's is your best bet for a good Mai Tai!

Now just a shell, Key West's Hukilau slowly rots in the Florida Sun. But its Tiki still greets visitors along route one, and definite evidence of Tikidom remains.

Formerly the Jade East/Shanghai Lounge. According to James Teitelbaum's fantastic book, "Tiki Road Trip", the Jade East at one time featured rattan, a fountain, and at least two large Hawai'ian style carved Tikis that were 10 feet tall each and possibly carved by Saint Clare Homma.
Fortunately, with the passing of the Jade East, the Tikis appear to have found their way to a collector. What remains is very little Tiki, but plenty of fine atmosphere. The transition to Japanese works well. To this day, the fountain still burbles along happily and there are a few exotic standards on the cocktail menu.
UPDATE- for pix of the Tikis and the Jade East look no further than- http://tulsatvmemories.com/tulstiki.html#tikigods

While there's another surprise in here, the absolute highlight of our trip through Calgary was an all too short evening spent with Slacks Ferret, a real Artist, with a deep love for all things Tiki. Best of all though, he's a keeper of Tiki secrets! I can't wait to see how his home space comes along- he has ideas percolating, and is slowly amassing all the components for one heck of a home bar. Stay tuned to his 'creating' thread over on TikiCentral to see what he's up to- http://www.tikiroom.com/tikicentral/bb/viewtopic.php?topic=7716&forum=7&hilite=slacks%20ferret

Ahhhhhh :) Tiki 'retirement'- if one doesn't mind the duck doo, the manmade lake is quite the desert tropical oasis.
